Can I retire early?

Sidney B. of Utah asks, "Can I retire early?"
Pension Evaluators® at Troyan Inc.® answers, "Some Retirement Plans may allow participants to retire prior to the
specified age of retirement, in the event that the participant has completed
the minimum years of service, at a younger age than would be considered
normal or average.
We suggest that you refer to your plan documentation, or contact someone
at the plan to determine if early retirement is offered, and if so, whether
you are eligible. This information may also be found in your Summary Plan
Description.
Some plans allow participants to retire earlier than the minimum age specified
provided the participant has completed a minimum number of years of service
and meets a younger age requirement. If you qualify for early retirement,
you will be able to receive all of the retirement benefits available to
normal retirees. You should consult your plan document to determine if
your plan has an early retirement provision."
